Sigh! Don ko dekhna namumkin hai
I like Farhan Akhtar. His last two movies. His attitude, which seems super cool. His casual style of dressing. And I also like his wife's funky salon -- B Blunt. In the current crop of directors, Farhan on the back of both his previous films -- Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya -- gave us some great cinema and made us expect – in Hindi film lingo – more ha... more...

Where did the flavour go?
Trishna, the much feted seafood restaurant frequented by celebrities like Imran Khan, Jemima Goldsmith and my dear friend Michael Botelho opened a branch near my home recently. Always perked by any new seafood restaurant opening around where I live, considering the few there are, I was super kicked. After making a 8.30 pm non smoking dinner reserva... more...

Tambola on the Shatabdi Express
The train was just pulling out of Saharanpur station when the noisy bunch of kids and their energetic mothers decided it was time to play tambola. Not amongst their two families of course but include whoever was willing to join in."Do you want to play tambola," the young mother went asking passengers half way down the compartment. A couple agreed. ... more...

The Monkey's Paw
W W Jacob's classic short story The Monkey's Paw  was part of my school reading. The story had a haunting effect and stood in that diverse collection. The title came to mind while I was writing this blog...Now the reason for this post -- read on.It was one of those moments when you do something just because it’s there, right in front of you. Why el... more...

'Is there a doctor on board'
You are lucky if you find a seat at the Mumbai and Delhi airports. Last weekend, I spent two hours propped on an airport trolley, like many other passengers at Delhi airport. Realising that John Banville’s The Sea was a boring airport read, just looking around was the pastime at hand. The recognisable faces were Sachin Pilot, MP, and Apaharan direct... more...

The horror of war
'Let not any country go through the fire we were in’ -- the words of the Afghan ambassador are absolutely chilling. What it must be to see your country suffer 25 years of war and then a repressive regime like the Taliban. What it must be to live under siege, to know that being alive was nothing short of a miracle. What it must be to see your hometo... more...

‘Hello, I’m Johnny Cash’
Walk the Line is expected to hit theatres in India in March. With Joaquin [pronounced ‘Wakeen’] Phoenix playing country legend Johnny Cash, I’m certain it’ll be a helluva performance. Wasn’t he just superb as Commodus in Ridley Scott’s spectacular film Gladiator? What say, Raja?In the frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar this year, JP has sung the ... more...

Book a hotel before a flight
What’s with Delhi and no hotel rooms? It was only after trying for three days and a huge effort by three separate sets of friends that I finally got a hotel room in Delhi. It’s not as though I was making a last minute reservation. In fact, the booking inquiries began almost ten days before the trip. I’ve heard Bombay is no better. Two weeks ago, a ... more...

Oh, the stress of March!
Every approaching March, I find myself stressing out at the very thought of organising my investment documents. Premium receipts, bonds, mutual funds, medical insurance, medical bills -- even before looking for them I’m sure as hell that I’d have misplaced some. This year, the stressing began a little earlier. I thought I was getting better organis... more...

reading, linking, holidaying
Not that I blog too frequently anyway, but do check out these links while I am gone for a week.My friend Leo's slightly strange but hugely entertaining blog. He's just become a respectable member of the working public by joining Time Out Mumbai, which, by the way, is also online now. Do check out to know what to do, where to go, what to eat, etc. A...  more...

The Real Shopping-Cart Revolution
Five hundred years of progress packed into a sack of flour.By J. Bradford DeLong, Wired MagHere's some food for thought.A smart shopper can buy a 5-pound bag of Gold Medal flour for 69 cents. That's enough to feed three people for a day - 7,500 easy-to-digest, relatively nutritious, and potentially tasty calories. All for less than 0.7 percent of a...  more...

Surreal lunacy with a fun filmmaker
When you write a negative review, there is almost always backlash. Most of you who have read me before do thus realise I'm not the most popular man in Bollywoodland -- to say nothing of Rediff's messageboards -- and there are filmmakers who loathe me, having taken a review too personally.Anyway, last week I wrote a column about Anurag Kashyap and h...  more...
